History

Little more than a decade ago, two of the most eminent law firms Houthoff and Buruma Maris combined their strength and merged to form Houthoff Buruma. Since our inception we have had the privilege to advise clients in matters that have been pivotal to developments in the legal system and that have helped define best practises.

Houthoff Buruma has throughout the years been involved in many landmark cases that have been instrumental in changing the legal landscape. Amongst others, Houthoff Buruma is involved in the largest bankruptcy in history, as a bankruptcy trustee of Lehman Brothers Treasury Co., the largest claimant of Lehman Brothers. In 2007, the firm represented ABN AMRO in its Supreme Court litigation, which resulted in a successful outcome for ABN AMRO, allowing it to sell LaSalle to Bank of America. Also we advised Arcelor on the $ 33.8 billion merger with Mittal Steel in 2006, creating the largest steel producing company in the world.

Drawing on legal expertise built up over the years has enabled us to place current events in a historical context. Although we are proud to be firmly rooted in the history we leave behind us, we are more focused on what lies ahead of us.
