Jan specialises in IT, outsourcing, cloud computing, privacy, data protection, big data, the processing of personal data, ecommerce, and intellectual property law. He regularly advises on complex domestic and cross-border commercial IP/IT contracts and privacy related subjects. Jan also has extensive litigation experience, and helps clients become compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), outsource IT and business processes, and draft and negotiate agreements on software licences, source code escrow arrangements and cloud solutions. 

Jan is a member of the Netherlands Association for Information Technology and Law and the Dutch Privacy Law Association. He is also an expert author on technology and law for the Computable website.

  • Houthoff has advised tesa SE on the acquisition of shares in the capital of  Nijkerk-based Polymount International B.V. from its current shareholders. Polymount is active in the business of developing, manufacturing and sale of a producer of self-adhesive ‘twinlock’ sleeves used in printing presses. The new combined infrastructure of Polymount’s Twinlock division and tesa will create opportunities for synergy and growth on a global scale.

  • Houthoff represented Sligro Food Group in the strategic, long-term partnership with Heineken Netherlands for beer and cider logistics in the Netherlands, and the sale of other parts of the Heineken beverages wholesaler to Sligro Food Group. The partnership makes Heineken Sligro’s number one partner for beer and cider.

  • Houthoff advised Media Markt – Saturn on the establishment of a joint venture with Talpa, Juke Nederland B.V. Juke has launched an online on-demand music streaming service offering unlimited access to songs, playlists and radio content.
  • Houthoff advised a Netherlands based insurance company on the outsourcing of the administrative handling of car insurance claims to an India-based business process outsourcing service provider.
  • Houthoff advised a multinational financial services company on the outsourcing of the administrative servicing of a consumer mortgage portfolio to a Netherlands-based financial services provider.
  • Houthoff assisted multiple companies with the first data breach filings in accordance with the new Data Breach notification legislation in effect as of 1 January 2016.
  • Houthoff advised investment firm H2 Equity Partners on the acquisition of an interest in fixed base flight simulator producer Multi Pilot Simulations B.V. The company has its head office in the Netherlands with a production location in Germany. H2 will support the existing MPS management team in its growth plans.
  • Houthoff advised multiple companies in the automotive sector on privacy aspects of connected cars.
  • Houthoff advised a telecommunication services provider on net neutrality matters.
  • Paul, Weiss together with Houthoff advised Apollo Global Investment in the 80.1% interest in Lumileds, a leading supplier of LED components and automotive lighting. Philips will retain the remaining 19.9% interest in Lumileds.
  • Houthoff advised various companies on compliance issues with e-discovery requests made in the United States.
