Bert specialises in national and international restructuring and insolvencies and advises companies in crisis situations. He also specialises in acquisition, asset and real estate financing. Bert provides advice relating to distressed M&A transactions, loan-to-own strategies and non-performing loan transactions. He advises on and litigates cases concerning securities rights and the liability of directors and shareholders. Bert has a special focus on the German market.

Bert is a member of the Dutch Association of Insolvency Lawyers (INSOLAD) (a member association of INSOL International) and the International Bar Association. Bert regularly publishes and lectures on insolvency law. He is also an editor for the Tijdschrift Financiering, Zekerheden en Insolventierechtpraktijk journal.
  • V&D was a landmark brand of high street located department stores (63 stores) in the Netherlands and was founded in 1887. Houthoff advised the company in a wide array of matters, including the restructuring of its debt, and representing the company in several high profile litigation matters related to real estate and labour law.
  • Houthoff assisted Alcogroup, Vanden Avenne Commodities and Vandema in the purchase of the bio-ethanol factory of Abengoa Bioenergy Netherlands in Rotterdam, which was declared bankrupt earlier this year due to financial problems of the Spanish parent company Abengoa S.A. The transaction is subject to permission being granted by the relevant competition authorities.
  • Houthoff is advising the Province of Zeeland, one of the public shareholders of Delta N.V., on the restructuring and split of Delta N.V., including its nuclear, wholesale, retail and grid operating businesses.
