In collaboration with Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP, we hosted the webinar 'The Royal Dutch Shell Carbon Emissions Decision' on 31 August 2021.
On 26 May 2021, The Hague District Court issued a landmark judgment by ordering Royal Dutch Shell to reduce its group CO2 emissions (scope 1-3) by 45% by 2030, compared to 2019 levels. In this co-hosted webinar, we addressed the judgment and provided European and U.S. perspectives on the judgment's impact on companies, industries and countries worldwide, with particular attention to disclosure aspects and litigation risks. The speakers discussed:
- The Dutch court's ruling
- The state of the law in other jurisdictions
- The court decision's applicability to other companies and countries
- Scope of the emissions reduction obligations
- Developments in disclosure obligations and practices – a European and U.S. perspective
- Up-and-coming litigation risks o Disclosure-related exposures
o Industry-related exposures
We concluded the webinar with a Q&A.
