Roel Theissen joins Houthoff
Roel Theissen (1968) began his new role as a lawyer with Houthoff on 1 November. Theissen specialises in prudential supervision, the area of law that deals with the financial soundness of banks, insurers and other financial institutions.
Theissen is an expert in national and international rules on prudential supervision. He has also written a handbook on the subject, concerning European supervision of banks and how this ties in with the system of prudential and market conduct supervision in the financial sector (EU Banking Supervision). He also wrote his Ph.D. thesis on the intensification of banking regulation during the most recent crisis and the crisis that preceded it (‘Are EU Banks Safe?’).
At Houthoff, Theissen will mainly focus on advising financial institutions and their clients on the interpretation and application of European and/or Dutch law. This covers areas such as handling capital, managing claims and their sale, market access and the liquidation of banks and insurers. This can be done proactively in preparation for discussions with regulatory bodies, as well as through assisting in situations where there is already a difference of opinion. He will also be involved in Houthoff's internal training programme and will help our lawyers expand their knowledge in this fast-growing area of law.
'With his wide-ranging expertise in prudential law, Roel is an extremely valuable addition to our team. We will be able to provide our clients with an even better service thanks to his unique and in-depth knowledge of prudential supervision,' says Berry van Wijk, lawyer and partner of Houthoff. Berry is a specialist in the regulation of the financial sector, with a particular focus on the insurance sector where she assists insurers and brokers in their contacts with the regulators, internal disputes, discussions with clients and the development of products and distribution channels.
