Richard specialises in mergers and acquisitions. He has extensive experience in a variety of sectors, assisting both corporate and private equity clients. Richard also advises on management buy-outs, private equity investments and joint ventures. Having obtained a business degree from Erasmus University Rotterdam, Richard advises clients using an interdisciplinary approach to law and financial economics. He is known for his hands-on commercial approach. From 2016 to 2017, Richard was seconded to Herbert Smith Freehills in London.

Houthoff assisted CDL Hospitality Trusts (CDL) in a transaction where CDL took a majority interest in the four-star hotel 'MGallery by Sofitel' in Florence, Italy. Houthoff worked on this transaction with Allen & Gledhill (Singapore), Shooklin & Bok (Singapore) and Chiomenti (Italy).
Houthoff represented Active Capital Company in their acquisition of Lumat International from their previous owners. Lumat is a supplier of High Tenacity Yarn, Polyester, Polyamide, (Nylon), Aramide and Synthetic continuous filament yarn.
Houthoff represented the sellers of Kompas International, a provider of trust and corporate services, in their divestment of Kompas International to Praxis IFM, one of the largest independent and owner-managed financial services groups headquartered in the Channel Islands.
Houthoff represented Sandd in the acquisition of Van Straaten Post from its previous owners. The combined group is able to service the 24-, 48- and 72- hours postal market throughout the work week with national coverage. The acquisition is part of Sandd’s strategy to become a real alternative on the Dutch postal market.
Houthoff has advised Smart Holding B.V. in a transaction whereby Smart Holding agreed on the acquisition of all outstanding shares in the capital of Mascot Europe B.V. from its shareholder MagVat Holdings B.V.
Both Smart Holding, via its subsidiary Nedac Sorbo B.V., and Mascot Europe are, together with its respective affiliates, active as wholesalers in consumer goods.

Houthoff advised Refresco Gerber NV's Board of Directors on the application to admit Refresco Gerber’s shares to listing and trading on Euronext Amsterdam. Refresco Gerber is the leading European bottler of soft drinks and fruit juices for retailers and A-brand owners. The initial public offering consisted of a primary offering of newly issued ordinary shares, and a secondary offering, consisting of ordinary shares which were held by the current shareholders. The shares were listed at an offer price of EUR 14.50 euro per share, valuating Refresco Gerber’s equity at an amount of EUR 1,176.8 million as per the offering.
