Cassation Seminar: the Dutch Supreme Court and politics

The Supreme Court is handling more and more civil cases involving major social and political interests. Examples include cases on the achievement of climate targets and the provision of free contraceptives. How does the Supreme Court deal with this type of cases? What scope does the Supreme Court have as the highest court in relation to the legislature and the executive branch? And when does it use this scope and when does it refrain from doing so? Does the Supreme Court even have democratic legitimacy to give such far-reaching judgments? What developments do we expect in this area?

To discuss these questions, we will be hosting the Cassation Seminar: the Supreme Court and politics. During the seminar, speakers from the legislature, politics, science and public interest litigation will engage in debate prompted by statements presented to them.
The audience is invited to join in.
