For specific products such as coffee, soy and palm oil, the party placing these products on the EU market must ‘ensure’ that a product has not contributed to deforestation and has been produced legally. The EUDR thus creates a far-reaching obligation for companies to implement a due diligence procedure and collect extensive data on the products’ origin to prove that no deforestation occurred.
