Second edition of the book ‘Cassatie’ (Supreme Court litigation): an up-to-date guide for practitioners

20 May 2026

Bart van der Wiel, Naomi Dempsey, Laura van Gardingen, Albert Knigge, Jan Frans de Groot and Alexander van der Voort Maarschalk, who are or have been members of Houthoff’s Supreme Court Team, have published a second edition of the book ‘Cassatie’. The book is aimed at legal practitioners who deal with appeals to the Supreme Court, such as cassation lawyers, litigators and professionals at the Supreme Court, as well as academics and other interested parties.

About the book

Cassatie provides a comprehensive and accessible overview of all aspects of civil cassation proceedings and preliminary ruling proceedings. The authors paint a complete picture of the current state of affairs, supported by recent examples from practice. In addition, the book examines various perspectives drawn from the literature, critically reflecting on current practice and offering alternative viewpoints. It thus not only provides an overview, but also includes context and commentary on the status quo.

Book launch

The book was launched at the spring meeting of the Dutch Association of Civil Cassation Lawyers (VCCA). During the meeting, Karlijn Teuben spoke about how the Supreme Court operates, Sikke Kingma discussed the merits and limitations of a Supreme Court Bar, and co-author Laura van Gardingen addressed the substantive issues the authors had grappled with, such as the application of foreign law in cassation proceedings.
