The Standing Government Committee is an independent advisory body and has both a national and an international task. Its main national task is to advise the two houses of the States General and the government about legislation on matters of private international law.
Its international task is laid down in the Statute of the Hague Conference on Private International Law. The Statute assigns certain tasks to the Standing Government Committee, such as presenting candidates for the appointment of the Conference’s Secretary General and Secretaries. The Standing Government Committee has also been designated as the national body liaising for the Netherlands with the Hague Conference’s Permanent Bureau.
