Joost specialises in insolvency law. He frequently advises debtors, creditors, equity holders, directors and insolvency practitioners in restructurings and special situations. He has a particular interest in high- complexity cases at the interface between insolvency law, civil law and financial regulatory law. As such, heJoost also regularly represents financial institutions and public authorities. His recent experience includes advising:

  • the Fortenova Group, an Eastern European agri-/food group, on its cross- border restructuring;
  • DSB Bank, a (former) large Dutch consumer bank, on the post-bankruptcy wind-down of its assets surplus of EUR 650 million;
  • Lumileds, a global leader in innovative lighting solutions, on its comprehensive financial restructuring; and
  • the Dutch Derivatives Committee, established by the Minister of Finance, on the formation of the Uniform Recovery Framework (a scheme to compensate Dutch SMEs for interest rate derivatives concluded with the six largest banks in the Netherlands).

Joost is affiliated with INSOL Europe and INSOL International. Joost is also an INSOL Fellow, having graduated as part of the 2023/2024 Class of INSOL International’s Global Insolvency Practice Course together with a distinguished group of insolvency professionals from around the globe.

In 2018 and 2019, Joost worked as the deputy company secretary at Heineken for 14 months. His work there mostly involved matters related to corporate governance and regulatory compliance.

  • Represented Fortenova Group, the largest food producer and retailer in South-Eastern Europe with an annual turnover of EUR 5 billion and 47.500 employees, in the implementation of a comprehensive restructuring resulting from the presence of sanctioned debt and equity holders in its capital structure and cross-border litigation in connection therewith.
  • Advising the Derivatives Committee on the creation of the Uniform Recovery Framework for Interest Rate Derivatives, a compensation mechanism that compensates Dutch SMEs for interest rate derivatives they purchased from the six largest banks in the Netherlands.
  • Advising DSB on the distribution (and its preparation of that) of approximately EUR 650 million estate surplus to more than 280,000 interest claimants, consisting of former DSB account holders and the Dutch Central Bank (DNB) as administrator of the deposit guarantee scheme.
