Karien is gespecialiseerd in insolventierecht en herstructureringen. Zij is met name geïnteresseerd in internationale herstructureringen, zoals de herstructurering van Agrokor d.d. in Kroatië. Daarnaast wordt Karien regelmatig door de rechtbank Amsterdam benoemd als curator en is zij vereffenaar van de Nederlandse tak van Lehman Brothers. Ook was zij in verschillende hoedanigheden betrokken bij WHOA-procedures. Karien adviseert daarnaast bestuurders, ondernemingen en schuldeisers in uiteenlopende insolventiesituaties. Op deze wijze bestrijkt Karien het gehele gebied van herstructureringen en insolventies. Jaarlijks publiceert ze de kroniek over de in 2021 ingevoerde WHOA.
